Helping Teens Find Their Media Balance: A Free Circle Session

Helping Teens Find Their Media Balance: A Free Circle Session

If you work with teenagers, you've probably seen firsthand the anxiety, the comparisons, and the phone that never turns off without a prompt or rule being set. Social media is reshaping how young people see themselves, each other, and the world.

Here’s the deal: as much as we may have good intentions, lectures about screen time don't work! What does work is giving teens a structured space to reflect on their own relationship with technology — first, what they love about it, and then what might not be so great — and letting them make their own choices about it.

That's exactly what this free session does.

What's Inside

Session Two of OCF's Empowerment and Identity on Social Media activity guide, "Finding My Media Balance," is a complete, ready-to-run Girls Circle session for ages 11–18, though easily adaptable for all genders. It includes:

  • A Screen Time Usage Discussion that invites youth to look at their own data without judgment

  • A Pros and Cons exploration of life in virtual communities — allowing them space to explore the real benefits before considering the real downsides

  • Challenge Cards with 25+ non-media activity options that participants can choose from and commit to

  • A "My Media Plan for a Perfect Day" handout that helps each participant build their own balanced vision of life, both online and offline

  • Reflection questions to draw their experience from the Circle into their own lives

The Circle participants leave with a personal plan they've created themselves — signed, photographed, and placed somewhere they'll actually see it.

Why It Works

OCF Circle models don't have adults telling teens what to do — nobody likes or responds well to that, especially teens. Circles create the conditions for teens to figure it out for themselves — with a supportive peer community, a skilled adult facilitator creating a safe container, and evidence-informed programming. That is what makes outcomes stick.
