We Emphasize Strengths

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We often focus on supporting the mental well-being of those around us, but let's remember the importance of taking care of ourselves too.

In this spirit, OCF staff gathers in Circle to truly connect and check in with each other. This month the Circle theme was one of our core values: We Emphasize Strengths. Our Director of Curricula, Shayla Benson, led us through a creative and uplifting activity using Mentimeter.

Shayla invited us to complete the statement, "I am...," and the result was a word cloud that beautifully captured our collective strengths and positive affirmations.

Seeing our strengths as a vibrant image was a powerful reminder of our team’s resilience and positivity.
At OCF, we train, write, and support others in using a strengths-based approach while facilitating Circles, and it was a healthy practice to use that strengths-based approach on ourselves as well. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey.

One Circle Foundation is bringing the Girls Circle Facilitator Training back to the SF Bay Area on October 22-23, 2024, at Uptown Station Oakland. For the first time since 2019, you can join us for a training in California to elevate your Circle facilitation skills and connect with others who strive to positively impact youth and teens’ lives.

Please Welcome Lauren Perry to One Circle Foundation Staff

Lauren has been in the OCF sphere for decades. As a teenager, she participated in Girls Circle, and as a young adult, she became a Girls Circle Facilitator and Executive Director of a non-profit that provided Girls Circles. Lauren has served on the OCF Board of Directors for the last few years. Now, we are pleased beyond belief to welcome Lauren to One Circle Foundation’s full-time staff as our new Senior Director of Development and Communications. Lauren brings a lifetime of experience and a wealth of knowledge. Get to know Lauren from her message below, by reading her bio on our website, and you can reach her directly at lauren@onecirclefoundation.org or 415-419-5119 x709.

"I have been working with young people in many different roles since 2007. My passion for ensuring that young people have their needs met, are respected, are able to live full lives, and are not held down by societal barriers pushes me to do the advocacy and policy work I do now in the youth and adult legal system.

My nonprofit journey and work with adolescent girls led me to me pursue a Master's in Social Work, in which I obtained from California Baptist University a year ago. I am now pursuing a path of licensure, which will only further equip me to promote wholeness to those I am blessed to serve and work alongside."

Circle Demonstration in Las Vegas, NV
Training Host: Eagle Quest

One Circle Foundation often provides Circle demonstrations when private contract trainings are offered in person.

Circle demonstrations are valuable for training participants because they can witness a real-life Circle experience involving a One Circle Foundation Trainer and actual youth participants. By modeling empathy, open-mindedness, and a strengths-based approach, attendees witness the skills necessary to be an excellent Circle Facilitator. The facilitator skills exhibited, in turn, will build trust and openness with the youth in Circle.

Victoria Mahand, the OCF Director of Training, traveled to Las Vegas, NV, to provide the Girls Circle Facilitator Training and a Circle demonstration for some of the training attendees. Victoria shared:

"The youth in Circle demonstrated bravery, courage, and voice. One participant stated, 'It felt nice to be heard...'. After observing the Circle demonstration, three of the staff came to me and said, 'It actually works.'"

Ask about adding a Circle demonstration when booking a contract training with One Circle Foundation. Email Danielle or call 415-419-5119 x704.

.Board Member Spotlight & Special Recognition:
Vilma Caban-Vazquez

In her words:
I was inspired to join the One Circle Foundation board because I was touched by their mission to create supportive circles that honor diversity, equity, and inclusion. I was very impressed with the La Mariposa curriculum that was acquired by One Circle Foundation a few years earlier.

I was very pleased to see that the La Mariposa curriculum was a premium option among many other great programs like Boys Council and Girls Circle. La Mariposa is a personal empowerment program for adolescent Latinas that can help young women cope with the challenges of dual cultural life. Their voices matter, and it is a resource with a range of presentation tools to help young Latina women tap into their inner power.

I am grateful that the One Circle Foundation is a place where I could be a part of a larger mission to promote positive social change. With a longstanding career in education that spans over three decades, I am fortunate to bring a range of international advocacy research skills to The One Circle Foundation. My graduate and post-graduate work was centered on equity and educational leadership. This sparked an interest in supporting economically disenfranchised communities.

As I entered the world of international research, in preparation for my doctoral research, I learned that there are so many wonderful international non-profit organizations seeking to pave the way to support women and children at risk. Upon earning my doctorate, I followed my heart's desire to use this professional credential to support different communities that advocate for women and children. This educational and advocacy research has led me to remarkable spaces in Egypt, Vietnam, Cambodia, Morocco, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.

In the Fall of 2023, I published my memoir and research chronicles--The Heart of an Advocate. As I wrap up my book tour, I am preparing to move to Puerto Rico to open a publishing house. I want to inspire the next generation of writers!

At One Circle Foundation, we believe that every youth and teen deserves the opportunity to develop resiliency through healthy connections. However, many youth-serving organizations in under-resourced and under-served communities lack the financial resources to provide the training and curricula necessary to make this possible.

That's where One Circle Foundation comes in. With each dollar donated, we are able to provide training and curricula scholarships to these organizations, giving youth and teens in these communities the chance to thrive.

We invite you to join us in supporting this crucial work by becoming a sustaining donor through a recurring monthly or yearly donation. Your contribution will make a significant impact on the lives of young people in need. Become a Sustaining Donor today.
