Creative Circles in Action: Fairfield PAL Teen Center Inspires Youth

At the Fairfield PAL Teen Center, youth mentor Fatima Adeboye is helping create a space where teens feel safe, supported, and empowered to grow. The center, serving the Fairfield, Suisun, and Travis communities in California, offers opportunities for young people to develop confidence and leadership skills. The PAL Teen Center uses the fun of traditional recreational programs to engage underserved youth and build essential life skills.

Guided by the motto “We play with a purpose,” this past August, Fatima facilitated a 10-session Girls Circle titled “Defying the Drama: A Wicked-Themed Girls Circle.” Through the Girls Circle model, Fatima provided a structured, strength-based space for girls to connect, share, and build skills for healthy relationships and self-expression.

Creativity in Circle—such as integrating fun themes—can help keep sessions engaging.

When we asked Fatima what inspired her to begin this meaningful work with youth, she shared:

I was one of those youth, and if it hadn't been for a center down the street with adults as resources, I wouldn't have been the person I am today. So, I do this work because I want to be the adult to a youth who needs resources. I am most excited when a youth actually has a moment of change. A moment of change is when you see the light bulb go off in their brain, when they finally understand something.”

Fatima reflected on one participant who started off quiet and reserved, but slowly opened up throughout the sessions:

There was a youth who came to Circle. At first, she really didn't say much. As time went on, her Check-ins got a little longer. Then she would come and say: "I have so much to tell the Circle". I thought it was wonderful that she had found a place to blossom and to share.”

Through her compassion and creativity, Fatima exemplifies the power of the Girls Circle model in action—helping youth feel seen, valued, and connected.

One Circle Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to the Fairfield PAL Teen Center for their innovation, dedication, and partnership in creating spaces where young people can truly thrive. Their creative approach to Circle facilitation shows how meaningful connection, structure, and play can transform youth engagement and build lasting confidence.
