Tips for School Leaders Navigating Today’s Challenges
In a time when educators are navigating constant shifts, including diminishing attention spans, new AI technology, and shrinking budgets, One Circle Foundation returned from the United School Leadership Conference in Seattle this week with a very clear message: United in community, we are stronger together.
Amid the challenges faced by educators, we heard a strong desire for spaces that center on connection, where students feel valued and safe so they can more readily learn and grow. Luckily, OCF showed up with tangible solutions rooted in healthy connection—Circle!
From New York to Alaska and many states in between, we connected with school leaders looking for innovative ways to support their students, educators, and staff. We spoke with a principal striving to keep diversity language present in the face of district whitewashing, a superintendent committed to bringing social-emotional learning training district-wide, and a leader from an under-resourced district seeking grant support to roll out Circles for their entire staff. Across the board, the collective goal was to create safe and healthy environments where young people can learn and grow.
Here are three takeaways we hope every school leader considers:
-
Make Space for Connection: Just one 60-90 minute Circle at any point in the week can transform a young person’s connection to school and classroom culture.
-
Invest in Your Staff’s Capacity to Care: Circles aren’t just for students—they support adult wellness too. Utilize our adult curriculum or adapt sessions for youth to engage teachers and school staff in connection and reflection. We all deserve Circle.
-
Stay Curious About AI, But Stay Grounded in Humanity: Let’s explore innovation, but not at the cost of belonging. We all need the opportunity for authentic connections with other people. Share from the heart, listen deeply, and stay open to other perspectives.
We left Seattle, reminded that innovation isn’t just about tech; it’s also about heart. Healthy relationships and connections will never go out of style. We appreciate the opportunity to show up for school leaders and are inspired by their dedication and the impact they make in their communities, caring for the young ones.
We love this hard, but heart work, and it all starts in Circle.
Remember, we are all connected.
