Trust Mothers
Mother’s Day is around the corner and the nation is absorbing a reality in which 42 percent of Americans who can give birth will likely lose their reproductive freedom within the coming months.
So how can we best honor our mothers this Sunday? Trust them. Believe them when they tell you they have a detailed understanding of the opportunities and limitations of their lives. They may be enjoying retirement, or know they’ll need to work straight through. They’re in touch with their mental health, though they may shoulder the burdens of others regardless. They know the state of wellness of the bodies they inhabit, and what it can and shouldn’t do.
60% of women who terminate their pregnancies in the United States are already mothers. For the mother who makes this choice, no one understands more than her the specific financial, mental, and physical toll another child will take on their and their family’s lives. This is why in the 10-year Turnaway Study, 95% of women report that having the abortion was the right decision for them.
This is not a right to be denied region by region. Each individual of childbearing age, wherever they live, is deserving of this vital and personal right. It is stunning and inconceivable that this nation is about to revoke reproductive choice for millions, even in instances of rape and incest… even for an 11-year old girl. I converted my strong feelings into activism by protesting on a street corner downtown Tuesday evening with my 3 and 5 year old daughters. I told them they could have any life they want when they grow up. I intend to keep that promise.
