Epidemic rates of teen depression have propelled the U.S. into a national emergency, with demands for care far exceeding supply and access to mental health professionals. Many social and environmental factors have contributed to extreme self-doubt, disconnection, and despair just as adolescents traverse the second-largest developmental stage of their lives.
This two-session prevention set promotes emotional resilience and well-being with accurate information on the condition of depression and how to find help for oneself or others.
Part 1 presents relevant facts through a mini-poster walk, a shared reading of symptoms, and a self-reflective journaling or drawing exercise. Part 2 invites youth to rotate as “panelists” to share their ideas on managing concerns about peers or their own well-being and create and exchange caring messages. A take-home wellness plan tool and helpful resources are included. For use with Girls Circle, The Council for Boys and Young Men, or Unity Circle, and other group settings where safety has been established.
