How to Take Action in Your Community for the Causes You Believe In

These days, more people than ever are thinking about how they can make a difference for others in their community, which is great because, from homelessness to environmental awareness, there are plenty of causes that need more attention. If you have the drive to make a difference, now’s the time to step up. Janet Campbell of Elder Spark shares some advice about different ways that you can take action in your town today.

Teach Others

Those who really want to make a long-term difference for the people of their community have the option of returning to school to become a teacher. Many impoverished communities are at a disadvantage because they don’t have the same quality of education that those in other places are provided, but you can make a difference by earning your degree and teaching the children of your community. You can choose from many different specialties, from science education to mathematics, and any of these areas will help the people of your city grow so they can have more opportunities in life.

You can also go a less traditional route and become a life coach, mentor, or facilitator for those in need. You can attend a One Circle Foundation training, purchase one activity guide, and start a Girls Circle, Boys Council, Unity Circle, or Women's Circle in your community in order to support others to develop resilience and healthy connections to themselves and others.

Volunteer and Donate

Grow Ensemble notes that a great way you can connect with people in your community from all walks of life is by volunteering. There are many places where you can offer your help. The beauty of these organizations is that you can help those less fortunate and do it alongside other people from your community. By meeting with these new people, you can organize even more activities. To get started, contact local organizations in your area and ask what you can do to help them. You may be able to set up a regular schedule with your favorite charity or have them contact you when a volunteering opportunity arises.

These organizations and charities often rely on donations as well. Consider donating clothes to a homeless shelter or non-perishable food to a food bank. You could also donate supplies to your local pet rescue or shelter. Be sure that the items you do donate are durable and made of quality materials; reading veterinarian-based product reviews and recommendations is a great place to start.

Environmental Awareness

Another major issue more people are focusing on is the condition of our environment and what we can do on an individual basis to help heal planet Earth. Even if you are acting alone, there are many impactful actions you can take, such as cleaning up the garbage on a hiking trail or along a busy street.

If your town could use more greenery, then you could also gather a group of volunteers to plant trees that will provide clean oxygen for the community, or you can start a recycling program in your town where people can take their trash for proper disposal. The American Community Gardening Association points out that another great idea is to grow a community garden where everyone in town can plant their favorite things while bonding with one another. Then you can take your yields to local food pantries or soup kitchens.

 Start a Nonprofit

If there’s a local cause that’s near and dear to your heart, you can even launch your own nonprofit. This gives you the opportunity to raise awareness in your community and raise funds to benefit your cause. Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to form a nonprofit corporation, and you can take care of a lot of the formation paperwork online. Forming an NPC protects your board members from personal liability and offers many tax advantages, which can allow you to reach your mission at a fraction of the cost compared to a for-profit organization. Plus, you can tap into free online tools to do things like build a website, build a social media following and seek donations.

As you can see, there are many ways that you can help your community thrive by taking up noble causes. From volunteering your time at a local organization to starting your very own nonprofit or both, there are many ways that you can give back. Believe it or not, any help you can give will make a big difference.
