In honor of 20 years at One Circle Foundation we invite you to share the journey with us from 1995 to present.

Thank you to all the passionate and dedicated partners, trainers, facilitators, and staff who have contributed along the way and to the thousands of circle participants who have opened our hearts by sharing theirs. Here's to many more years of connection and belonging.

 

Beth Hossfeld, LMFT begins holding Girls Circle in fall 1995 with her daughter, nieces and classmates, writes an initial facilitator booklet
Giovanna Taormina meets Beth and begins to hold Girls Circles in her living room with her daughters and girls in the community; Beth and Giovanna support one another and recognize the positive bonds and meaningful responses from participants
Beth and Giovanna develop the Girls Circle Facilitator Manual – at that time named “Leading Girls’ Groups”
First training is held in the San Francisco Bay Area in November; participants from all youth-serving sectors from around the nation
Officially became a non-profit organization named Girls Circle Association, a Project of the Tides Center

Released first activity guides – Friendship, Being a Girl, and
Who I Am
GCA trains Court Support Services Division in CT; as a result Girls Circle is announced at AFJO Conference expanding the use of Girls Circle in juvenile justice
Organization becomes national consultants to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) who funds Girls Circle trainings in all sectors of care across the country
Launched more activity guides including Paths to the Future, especially responsive to girls at risk and involved with the justice system
Girls Circle Research is commenced with Dominican University; outcomes included significant increases in social support, self efficacy, and body image. Published in the journal Adolescence, Spring 2005
Giovanna invited to attend the OJJDP Girls Study Group convened with the intent to gain a better understanding of girls and delinquency
Second Girls Circle Study: Collaboration with Sonoma County Probation and Ceres Policy Research
Girls Circle recognized as a Promising Program in the OJJDP Model Programs Guide
New Girls Circle logo, redevelopment of all curricula into binder format; kit icons developed
Developed first Boys Council logo and curricula – Growing Healthy, Going Strong, and Standing Together in partnership with Tanya Wiser, LCSW and Lani Chow, Ph.D.
Held first Training of Trainers in San Francisco for 10 women across the nation
Title II Grant – Circles Across Sonoma; county wide rollout for girls in all sectors of juvenile justice at Sonoma County Probation – Five community based agencies deliver services
Developed Boys Council Facilitator Training Manual and recruited trainers across the country
Conducted first Boys Council Training for Tulare County Juvenile Services, Boys Council research in middle schools and juvenile diversion conducted by Portland State University
Development of Mother-Daughter Circle Guide and Training
Changed boys program to The Council for Boys and Young Men in response to youth feedback, new logo developed
Developed Women’s Circle Curricula in partnership with Ohio State University
Office of Justice funds a four-year study on Girls Circle aimed at preventing delinquency with Cook County Probation in Chicago and Development Services Group – one of only three gender specific programs in U.S. to be awarded research funding
Changed organizational name to One Circle Foundation,
spun off from Tides and became an independent nonprofit
Girls Circle model reaches evidence-based status proven to reduce delinquency in girls
Girls Circle program listed in SAMHSA’S National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices
Held first fundraiser in San Francisco with 75 guests; everyone experienced circle!
Center for Disease Control (CDC) funds a four year study on The Council for Boys and Young Men aimed at preventing violence with Cornell University and New York State Department of Public Health
One Circle Foundation celebrates 20 year anniversary!
